Look at Take A Seat YEG like a hive mind for your butt! This is a community database, built by and for underrepresented bodies.
Fat (plus-size), disabled, and other underrepresented bodies deserve comfort — while watching a live show, out shopping, enjoying a meal, and living our lives.
While there is not a whole lot one person can do — apart from resorting to vigilante seat-thievery in the dead of night — one thing we can do is share the knowledge of which spaces are safe and comfortable for our bodies; that’s the idea that Take A Seat YEG was born of!
The BIG Picture
What began as a grassroots project mapping venues in Edmonton has grown into a collaborative hub where people can share knowledge, lived experiences, and resources to improve accessibility and comfort for fat and disabled bodies.
At its core, Take A Seat is a crowdsourced database of venue accessibility information—restaurants, community spaces, businesses, and more. But it is also much more than a directory. It is a collective space for learning, dialogue, and advocacy, built by and for the community.

We believe that change happens when people come together to share their voices, stories, and solutions. By combining practical tools (like venue information) with opportunities for education and collective action, we aim to:
- Empower community members to make informed choices about where they gather, dine, and connect
- Amplify lived experiences of disabled, fat, and other underrepresented bodies in Alberta
- Encourage businesses and venues to understand and address accessibility gaps
Our work is fueled by volunteers, allies, and community members who believe in creating spaces where everyone can take a seat comfortably and with dignity. Whether you are looking for accessible spaces, want to learn more about accessible practices, or hope to contribute your own experiences, we’re happy you’re here.
